The Medical Billing & Coding program is designed to prepare the student so they are proficient in physicians’ offices, hospitals, long-term health facilities, hospice, assisted living and insurance companies. They are prepared with ample knowledge in the following: Organize and manage health information data, clarifying diagnoses, obtaining additional patient information from the physician. Students will also learn how to optimize patient reimbursement by using correct coding methods, insurance preparation to include: Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-care, Worker’s Compensation, HMO’s and private insurances.


The Billing and Coding program is designed to be proficient and knowledgeable in a physician’s office, hospital, hospice, long term health facility, assisted living and insurance to perform the following skills: good communication skills with staff and patients, coping skills, following HIPAA regulations, correctly code patient procedures and visits, keep office neat and orderly, keep records in patients charts and answer patient questions and address concerns.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialists assemble patients’ health information including medical history, symptoms, examination results, diagnostic tests, treatment methods, and all other healthcare provider services. Technicians organize and manage health information data by ensuring its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security. They regularly communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.

The increasing use of electronic health records (EHR) will continue to broaden and alter the job responsibilities of health information technicians. For example, with the use of EHR’s, technicians must be familiar with EHR computer software, maintaining EHR security, and analyzing electronic data to improve healthcare information. Health information technicians use EHR software to maintain data on patient safety, patterns of disease, and disease treatment and outcome. Technicians also may assist with improving EHR software usability and may contribute to the development and maintenance of health information networks.

Medical Billing and Coding Specialists’ duties vary with the size of the facility where they work. Technicians can specialize in many aspects of health information.

Dianne Williams Anderson, the founder and owner of Allied Health Careers Institute, is a Chattanooga Tennessee native and lived there most of her life while attending school and raising a family.  In 1999, as Dianne was looking to get back into the work force, she began to understand the many opportunities within the medical field.  After much research, she decided to attend the clinical medical assisting classes at a Chattanooga – based postsecondary school.  After her certification, Dianne began her new career in 2000 as a Certified Medical Assistant at a very successful Chattanooga – based OB/GYN practice for several years.  After gaining this hands on, practical experience in Clinical Medical Assisting she was offered a job as Regional Manager for a company providing lab services to the nursing home and home bound patients’ community.  She accepted the position, and while working, pursued a degree from Chattanooga State Technical Community College.  In 2005, Dianne was actually recruited back to the same postsecondary school in Chattanooga where she was originally certified from, to teach Clinical Medical Assisting classes.  Then, after teaching at that school for 2 years, she made an offer to the then current owners and actually bought the school.  Dianne taught, grew and ran that school for several years until selling her share to a partner in that business.  For personal reasons, Dianne was relocating to Middle Tennessee and wanted to reproduce the success she had in Chattanooga. ...
