We have Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes for all ages and all skill levels. Our structured program teaches Brazilian Jiu-jitsu groundwork, submissions, and effective techniques for self defense and competition prep. We hold gi, no-gi and mixed classes.
We also have a women’s BJJ class – Plus One Defense Systems was the first academy in CT to offer a women’s-only BJJ class.
The art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on ground work and submissions. Practitioners learn how to utilize Brazilian Jiujitsu principles from different positions on the ground with their partner. Students learn takedowns, basic and advanced positions, transitions between those positions, and submission techniques. The video shows practitioners wearing the uniform (gi); at Plus One Defense Systems, we also train without the uniform, which is known as “no-gi BJJ.”

Located at 9 Tolles Street in West Hartford, Connecticut, we have a staff of diversified instructors and offer martial arts instruction in Mixed Martial Arts/MMA, Kung-Fu, Karate, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Aikido, Jujutsu, Freestyle Kickboxing, Judo, Boxing, Capoeira, Kali/Silat, Kettlebell Training, and soft style arts… all under one roof!
We are open six days throughout the week. We have a 9,000-square-foot facility with a contemporary training area that includes a boxing ring and MMA cage and a traditional training area for the more formal arts. With a shower for students, a full fitness center, and 12 staff members, we are arguably the most fully functional martial arts school in the state of Connecticut, and we are ready to help you reach your training goals in a variety of styles!
