This course is practical and theoretical and incorporates a series of exercises performed on an Engineroom Simulator. The exercises increase in complexity as the course progresses. The final exercises deal with crisis situations and will make use of the knowledge and skills learned in all of the previous exercises.
Equipment failure or malfunction will be introduced during the later exercises to afford trainees practice in taking emergency preventative action and to practice Engine teamwork in critical situations. The selection of simulation exercises and Engineroom models can be tailored to the particular needs of the students and their sponsoring organizations. During exercises, trainees are expected to make use of effective Engineroom procedures, to observe the basic principles of keeping an Engineroom watch and demonstrating leadership and managerial skills as set out in the STCW. Each simulation exercise will be preceded by a session for briefing and planning and followed by a debriefing.

Human factors account for approximately 80% of accidents. This course's principal aim is to reduce the risk of accidents at sea with focus on casualty prevention and human error through a better understanding of the application of Leadership and Team working Skills and, the use of Leadership and Managerial Skills;
This course aims to provide knowledge understanding and proficiencies in the Following standards:

  • ERM - A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the Engine Room Resource Management training requirements in 46 CFR 11.325(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); 46 CFR 11.327(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); 46 CFR 11.329(a)(4)(iv); 46 CFR 11.331(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1); and 46 CFR 11.333(a)(3)(i) and (b)(1). Task number 1.4A
  • Leadership & Team working Skills- Task numbers 16.1A through 16.4A completion of this course demonstrates competence in leadership and team working skills according to the USCG FAQs letter of 7/7/14.
