This course is practical and theoretical the Detailed teaching syllabus from IMO Model course 7.01/7.02 has been expanded on to provide class discussion on the suggested topics and incorporates a series of exercises performed in the classroom with participants collaborating with each other to perform each task.
The exercises and action learning are as follows and are described fully in the lesson plans:

  • Ex1 Leadership vs. Team style
  • Ex2 Communication skills
  • Ex3 Handling Difficult people
  • Ex4 Leadership skill and Decision making
  • Ex5 Mock Trial
  • Ex6 Peer training

During exercises, trainees are expected to make use of effective ship procedures, demonstrating leadership and managerial skills as set out in the STCW.
Each exercise or action learning will be preceded by a session for briefing and planning and followed by a debriefing.

The course meets the latest mandatory requirements for approved training in the human element, leadership and Managerial skills and the standards of competence to be achieved.
This course is normally for technical officers following an approved education and training program leading STCW certification as:
• Chief mate or master on ships of 500 gross tonnages or more
• Second engineer officer or chief engineer officer on ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW propulsion power or more.
It meets the obligatory requirements relevant to Leadership and Managerial skills and application of leadership and team working skills as set out in Tables A-II/2 and A-II/2 also in Tables A-II/1, A-III/1 and A-III/6 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) incorporating the Manila amendments.
Collectively the material and exercises presented in this course will augment and enhance individual leadership skills and can be applied on a day to day basis.

Students will be able to control the operation of the ship and care for persons on board at the management level through the use leadership and managerial skills to ensure that:

  • The crew are allocated duties and informed of expected standards of work and behavior in a manner appropriate to the individuals concerned;
  • Training objectives and activities are based on assessment of current competence and capabilities and operational requirements;
  • Operations are planned and resources are allocated as needed in correct priority to perform the necessary tasks;
  • Communication is clearly and unambiguously given and received;
  • Effective leadership behaviors are demonstrated;
  • Necessary team member(s) share an accurate understanding of current and predicted vessel state and operational status and external environment;
  • Decisions are most effective for the situation;
  • Operations are demonstrated to be effective and in accordance with applicable rules.

A course completion certificate will be issued to the student upon successful completion of all course requirements and assessments.
