Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch Motor Assessments Only

This course aims to assess knowledge of watch standing proficiencies in the following standards:

RFPEW (Motor) - Any applicant who has successfully completed the Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch(Motor) Assessments (RESOLV-xxx) course, including practical assessments from the Guidelines for Qualification for STCW Endorsements as Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch, and the following tasks from NVIC 07-14: 1.1B; 1.1.C; 1.1.C; 1.1E; 1.1G; 1,1H; 1.1.I; 1.1.J; 1.1.K; 1.3A; 1.3.B; 1.3.C; 2.1A; 2.1B; 2.1.C; 2.2.A; 2.2.B; 2.3A; 3.1.B; 3.1.D; 4.2.B, will satisfy the assessment requirement of 46 CFR 12.609(a)(3) and Table A-III/4 of the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) Code, as amended 2010 Specification of Minimum Standard of Competence for Ratings Forming Part of an Engineering Watch (Motor).

This course is practical exercise performed on an Engineroom Simulator. The exercises increase in levels of watch responsibility as the course progresses. The first exercise simulates In Port Watch Duties and the second exercise simulates an At Sea Watch condition that will make use of the knowledge and skills learned in the previous exercise.

The selection of simulation exercises and Engineroom models can be tailored to the particular needs of the students and their sponsoring organizations.

Trainees are expected to have completed at least two months of shipboard Engineering duty and exhibit the minimum knowledge, understanding and proficiency required of RFPEWs required by the Standards of Training Certification and Watchstanding (STCW) as amended.

Each simulation exercise will be preceded by a session for briefing and planning and followed by a debriefing to evaluate each student’s performance.

After completion of this course, the student will have gained the following practical skills and will be assessed on each of them:

• Demonstration of competence in Engine room watch keeping procedures appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Use and demonstration of safe working practices appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Use and knowledge of basic environmental protection procedures appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Familiarity with Terms used in machinery spaces and names of machinery and equipment appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Operational use of appropriate internal communication systems appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Differentiate between Engine-room alarm systems and demonstrate the ability to distinguish between the various alarms appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Keep a Boiler Watch appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Carry out an At Sea Watch Routine appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Demonstrates operation of emergency machinery equipment and applies emergency procedures appropriate to the duties of an RFPEW,
• Demonstrates familiarity with the location of and use of firefighting

In order to accomplish this, the student’s watchstanding proficiency will be demonstrated using the following methods:

• Simulator exercises to demonstrate competency
• Oral questions that allow the student to reflect on what was demonstrated
• Written assessments to ensure understanding of key concepts
