Overview:    Illnesses can have a huge impact on a workforce. For example, carpel tunnel syndrome can force accommodations for an employee or even force significant amounts of time off. This is clearly recognized in physical and well-understood illnesses and conditions.

It is also understood that sometimes an illness will strike a person through no fault of his or her own - such as cancer - forcing the person to alter his or her work life significantly. People suffering from these conditions tend to be treated with compassion at work.

This understanding and compassion is often not extended to those with illnesses of the brain - mental illnesses - even though these illnesses are, indeed, physical and need to be treated like any other illness. This lack of understanding creates stigma around those with a mental illness and this stigma is part of the problem.

Historically, people have thought that those with mental illness, especially an illness like bipolar disorder or severe depression, don't work. We now know this isn't true. We now know that every mental illness from anxiety disorders to personality disorders to schizophrenia are present in the workplace. We also know that the impact of these illnesses is huge.

This is seen not only in lost workdays, revenue and productivity but also in employee quality of life. Additionally, the stress of the workplace can be a mental health concern in and of itself and it can make mental illnesses worse.

That's where this webinar comes it. It's important to understand the issues surrounding mental illness in the workplace. It's critical to thoroughly understand the scope of the problem so that solutions can match. This webinar focuses on defining the issues around mental health in the workplace, spotting possible problems and finding solutions to these problems. Tools and techniques are given to allow for conversations around mental health and for creating an environment in which tolerance and acceptance flourish

Why should you Attend: Mental illness, and mental health in general, in the workplace is becoming a bigger and bigger concern. In fact, it's estimated that $193 billion is the total amount that serious mental illness (like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder) cost the United States in lost earnings per year. A person with depression misses approximately 4.8 days every three months due to their condition.

This adds up to 200 million workdays lost due to depression in the United States annually. And workplace stress tends to make these numbers worse. Statistically, if you're working with or manage more than five people, at least one of them has a mental health condition.

Clearly, we can't ignore this issue, so how can we turn the tide? Understanding the realities of mental illness in the workplace is key.

Attendees of this webinar will learn how mental illness affects employees and the workplace in general and why it's critical to help those with mental health concerns at work. Attendees will also learn about the effects of stress on mental health. Mental illness stigma will be discussed along with how to reduce stigma in the workplace. Attendees will learn how to recognize signs of a mental health condition at work along with what to do if these signs are seen. The impact of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) will also be reviewed.
