About this course
Are you finding it difficult to start the conversation, or find the right words when communicating in English? Do you know how to start and end conversations in a polite way? Do you want to learn more about American, British, Canadian, Australian, South Korean, Colombian, and Chinese cultures? If so, you’ve come to the right course!
In this course, you will:
- Develop conversational English skills
- Listen to dialogues and group discussions to better understand spoken English and cultural norms
- Learn key words and expressions
- Engage in activities to help you better understand the meaning of conversations
- Learn to initiate your own conversations in English on a variety of topics

Speaker/s
Wenxia Zhang, Ph.D., Hong Kong Polytechnic University, 1999 is a professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Tsinghua University, China. Her research interests mainly include language testing and assessment, EFL/ESL teaching and learning,
second language acquisition, second language writing, and online EFL/ESL education and research. She has been publishing extensively on topics in these areas on various journals.
Fang Yang
Fang Yang is an associate professor at the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Tsinghua University, China. Her interests mainly include English for academic purposes, online learning, and Chinese literature. She is a productive textbook
writer and an active in-service teacher trainer.
Glenn M. Davis
Glenn M. Davis has been working in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures at Tsinghua University since 2013, and currently teaches courses in oral communication, research paper writing, and foreign language acquisition. His research interests
include designing and testing effective methods for foreign language teaching at the primary school level and leveraging technology and the Internet for educational purposes.
Thomas H. Piachaud worked in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literatures, Tsinghua Unviersity, over the course of three years. Initially involved with, and helping organize and structure the English Summer Camp, he also spent a semester teaching classes in Critical Thinking, Newspaper Reading and oral communication. Thomas also holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge where he conducted research on plastic light emitting diodes.
