Curriculum

Develop your personal practice. Your yoga practice is essential to this process. Maintain consistency to support your well-being. The asana portion of the training is based on five categories of asana: standing poses, seated postures, backbends, twists and inversions. Examine the alignment within the various postures using an anatomical and bio-mechanical lens. We will explore both static and dynamic ways to practice asana. Pranayama and meditation are integral components of our study and practice.

Integrate your intentions for study, practice and a yogic life. You will work with our Health Coaches, Chris and Nora Gordon, to identify your intentions, set goals unique to your needs and interests, and dive into the process of self-inquiry and transformation by designing daily rhythms that support your health, wellness and intentions.

Dive into the history and philosophy of yoga. Through these seminal texts we will gain access to tools of self discovery and a path towards happiness. Read and discuss the Bhagavad Gita, the yoga sutras of Patanjali, and learn about Tantric philosophy. Bring yoga to life with Ayurveda and nutrition and live in connection to the seasons. Learn how the chakras and koshas pertain to your daily life.

Learn anatomy specifically geared for yoga teachers. Includes muscle and bones, joint mobility, indications and contra-indications for various health conditions, pregnancy and stages of life.

Learn basic adaptive techniques to work with the needs of specific populations including chair and elder yoga, pre-natal and injury-specific conditions.

Learn how to lead restorative yoga postures for rest and relaxation of your students as well as your own personal self-care.

Discover communication tools and techniques to effectively tap into your heart and connect with others while teaching and during all of your exchanges. See how this process deepens your compassion for all beings. We will touch upon the teachings of non-violent communication.

Learn how to engage your students with use of clear language; proper sequencing, accessible modifications and adjustments to support and inspire your students’ in their practice. Using a hands-on learning mentorship model, participants will have the opportunity to practice teaching in small groups with the guidance and support of your teacher.

Acquire business skills and techniques that help your teachings reach your desired target audience. This includes developing your niche, use of social media for promotions and marketing and more.

Big River Yoga is a local, independently owned yoga studio in the Seward neighborhood of Minneapolis.  Our mission is to awaken the consciousness of people to realize our interconnection.  We offer a variety of yoga classes for beginners, continuing and advanced students. We also offer monthly restorative yoga, Thai massage classes and a variety of workshops with visiting instructors.  Massage therapy complements our yoga offerings and we specialize in Thai Massage.  Our RTT (Registered Thai Therapist) and instructor, Chris Gordon, leads Thai massage trainings.
