This training will provide you with step-by-step guidance in assessing, treating and managing clients who are at risk of suicide.

To defne basic terms related to  suicidality including the use of correct terminology;
To be familiar with statistics related to suicide in different subsets of population;
To develop awareness of suicide statistics across different cultures and in the State of WA;
   
To learn how to collect  accurate assessment information and summarize suicide risk;
To elicit warning signs of imminent risk of suicide;
To learn the how to of  eliciting risk and protective factors;
To demonstrate understanding of the interplay of risk and protective factors;
To develop an understanding of level of risk;                                                                                                                              
To understand the difference between chronic vs acute risk;

To develop therapeutic alliance by communicating concern in an effective manner; 
To understand the relationship between intent and the means chosen;       
To understand how to collect information about the means;
To tie counseling language to restrict access to  means to decrease lethality in suicide attempts; 
 
To develop a safety plan to assure safety and to convey the message that safety  is the highest goal;                 
To identify the elements that need to be included in treatment plan;
To learn to document assessment, treatment and management strategies;                                                           
To develop awareness of  what could be considered as  negligence
To understand the importance of postvention as   prevention.
