Course 2B: Occupational Hygiene and Engineering Risk Control
Details
This 10 week course focuses on:
- Measurement of hazardous substances (chemical and biological); sampling strategies and methods
- Measurement of physical agents—noise, vibration, temperature
- Practical approaches to the control ofchemical, physical, biological agents, including “control banding”
- Ergonomics, workload, and workplace design; risk assessment and engineering controls
in the modules, with coaching to prepare for OHTA certification examinations.
Course Delivery
Outline
This course focuses on knowledge and competencies related to Occupational Hygiene - the art and science of the recognition, assessment, and control of chemical and physical exposures to prevent work-related illness and injury. It aims at an introductory
to medium level of familiarity with the subject. It builds on Course 1 “Fundamentals of Occupational Health and Hygiene,” though this course is designed to stand alone; that is, students may begin the program with this course and take the first course the
following Fall.
Course 2B focuses on knowledge and skills regarding measurement and control of workplace hazards and is designed to prepare students for applying for certification from OHTA.
At the end of this course, the participants will be able to
- Describe measurement strategies for given exposure scenarios including purpose, equipment, and sampling devices.
- Calculate and interpret the exposure parameters for a case study including the meaning of results and recommendations for corrective action and control.
- Develop an asbestos survey and sampling plan.
- Prepare a personal sampling pump and learn the basics of its assembly.
- Design a monitoring strategy for asbestos work.
- Calculate ventilation system parameters and describe the necessary corrective actions for a given scenario.
- Describe performance monitoring for ventilation systems.
- Describe noise measurement strategies, including number and duration for sound level measurements.
- Create a noise map and identify the primary sources of noise.
- Interpret noise levels and recommend corrective actions.
- Use the Control Banding techniques of Asbestos Essentials to identify hazards and controls.
- Evaluate different work area configuration to develop an asbestos removal plan.

Schedules
Participants will be able to apply tools for risk assessment, develop preventive and corrective actions plans, investigate incidents such as accidents or outbreaks, evaluate fitness for work and participate in management processes such as certifications of emergency preparedness planning.
The program is designed for service providers or program managers in settings like occupational health clinics, unions, insurance companies, and governmental agencies who require more specialized training in occupational health and hygiene.
